Where Big Love for a Small World began:

Never quite growing up anywhere for long, I've fallen in love with going everywhere and enjoying wherever my home may be at the time.  My father taught me to work hard, to conquer my fears and to chase my dreams – never letting discouragement impede me from achieving my goals and making the most of every opportunity.  His passion for exploring inspired me to seek adventure and new places from a very young age.  He showed me that when we are willing to adjust our perspective, the world is a much smaller place than we think, despite all the distance and diversity.  His love for both my sister and myself and the time he took to teach us new things in life, even skills and knowledge normally reserved for sons, showed me how much he valued us as daughters and that being a girl didn’t have to limit us.  My mother taught me to appreciate the gift of relationships and that every person has value and deserves love.  Through her example she showed me how to care about others, whether they were down the street or on the other side of the world.  Her struggles with physical impairments and pain showed me how to be empathetic, and how to have faith even when life is difficult.  My parents taught me the best school in life is the one that teaches you to constantly learn new things, and that wisdom and knowledge are attained through more than just attending university.  I was brought up to understand that God created everyone equal, but that unfortunately not everyone is treated equally in the world.  Through their example, I learned to care about issues outside my own backyard, value people, appreciate life and thank God for everything.

Not only did my childhood give me an indispensable appreciation for adventure, exploring different places and experiences, but it also gave an appreciation for the amazing people each journey gives you the privilege of meeting.  Although I developed the ability to thrive on change, I can still appreciate the ‘now’ of each moment wherever I find myself.   Now that I’m married, my husband continues to encourage me to follow my dreams and live out my passion for social justice and positive change in the world.  He reminds me that love keeps you grounded and that having people who love you makes you appreciate both where you are going and where you come from.   Most importantly, he has taught me that the best moments in life - no matter where you are – are made when you are with those that mean the most to you.

Throughout my travels as young adult, the concept of 'us' vs. 'them' became even more of a reality to me, and solidified my belief that no matter where we are from,  we are all in this together.  Seeing the world as 'small' in this way helped me to understand that what happens to people on the other side of the planet affects us all.  Their injustice should be our injustice.  Our right to freedom and equality should be everyone's right to freedom and equality.  This perspective merged with my earlier influences in life, and together with my adventurous spirit and love for people, led me to become a community worker.  It is also how I became who I am today – traveler, adventurer, photographer, drummer, foodie, people-person and lover of the outdoors and animals.  Visit some of my pages to find out more about the Community Development work I’ve been involved with.  Also, be sure to check out my travel blog “Big Adventures in a Small World” and my Photography page!

Who we really are, is defined not so much by how we see the world, as how our actions make the world see us...
